Oppo is the smartphone company you turn to when you need decent features without spending a fortune. Oppo R15 stands no exception to that. The Chinese smartphone manufacturer has trotted an extra mile to create a designer handset and extensively market it. Its new flagship device was sure the talk of the town on its launch.
With its water resilient frame and massive 6.28 inches display, the handset is a huge improvement from its predecessor Oppo R11s. While some of its features are noticeably new to the company’s smartphone history, most of them are fairly average. The phone is currently priced at $779 in Australia and Rs. 30,990 in India.
Oppo R15 Design and Display
The device has a 16.26 inches AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display. Oppo seems to have derived inspiration from Apple, Samsung and Huawei altogether for its new handset. It does not feel oversized in hands given the 19:9 aspect ratio which also makes it extremely handy to use.
Anyone would notice the vivid, beautiful notched screen of R15 at first glance. The curved design along with its bezel-less display basically calls you to it. Oppo has finally replaced the aluminium body with polished glass and ceramic frames. Glass for the back is a gripping smartphone trend nowadays, Oppo certainly didn’t miss out on it. Moreover, the metal front comes protected with the corning gorilla glass.
Oppo is offering the device in some stunning colour variants, an absolute treat for people who prefer designer phones. Ceramic black and Ruby Red of which are the most popular ones, followed by Twilight blue and Snow White. There is another Ceramic black version exclusive to Chinese users as well.
While Oppo R15 Pro has a curved glass back, the same is missing in R15 itself. Despite the setback, the device has one of the handiest and attractive water resilient designs we have seen on a smartphone lately. The curves on the edge coupled with 176 g weight of the device make it a delight to hold. Excepting for the annoying camera bump on the back which can be easily withheld using a gel case.
The swift facial recognition feature turns the screen on some inches from the user’s face. The handset’s 20 MP rear camera aids the feature in not being fooled by some picture. However, if you prefer using the fingerprint sensor, the device also features it on the back. It is just as efficient and blazing quick as the face unlock feature.
Oppo R15 Features and Performance
R15 runs on the popular Android 8.1 Oreo operating system and MediaTek Helio P60 processor, combining for a decent overall handset performance. The device comes in one variant of 128GB storage capacity with 6GB RAM.
The iOS- Esque ColorOS 5 on which Oppo R15 runs, is the reason for a better Al performance, new navigation gesture facilities and completely re-designed themes and icons in the phone. It has a WeChat integration which boosts the overall gaming experience on the device. ColorOS is not all too heavy but lags behind regular Android, packing the Oppo device with social networking apps and other unnecessary pre-instals.
The user-interface would not surprise users as it is quite similar to the mainstream smartphone interface. All of the installed apps immediately appear on the home-screen, loading it with icons at times. There is no app launcher or default folder for that. The lock screen features a slideshow of selected imagery, you can choose from the default ones or add from the media.
MediaTek’s Helio P60 on the Oppo R15 packs an octa-core processor of 4x Cortex-A73 @2.0GHz and 4x Cortex-A53 @2.0GHz. A tri-core Mali-G72 GPU handles the graphics. The R15 also comes with 6 gigs of RAM.

Oppo R15 Battery and Camera
The Non-removable Li-Po 3450 mAh battery of Oppo R15 comes acquaint with the fast charging feature but did not live up to our expectations with it. Oppo does lack in strong battery power in most of its smartphones. The massive screen takes a toll on the battery in this one as well.
Despite this one rather strong setback, Oppo’s vivid dual cameras outweigh many flaws. The 20 MP, f/2.0 selfie camera is clearly a winner if you have the beauty mode on. The 16MP/5MP dual back camera’s performance was quite exceptional in natural and artificial light alike.
You will have to tweak the software a little to get that gorgeous bokeh effect in your pictures. Overall, the back camera is highly responsive to touch and produces sharp images. Featuring a number of gimmicks to apply effects and alter the lighting to your preference, the camera is packed with fancy augmented reality effects. However, the front camera, at times, gets the pictures unstable if not held stable by the user.
